Beautiful photos don't just happen, they are carefully planned sometimes.  Simplicity is important when choosing clothing, solid colors being best.  (To assure success you may want to bring an additional clothing choices - different colors.)  Early morning (like 9am) or late afternoon (4-8pm) are generally the best lighting.  Backgrounds are sometimes less important, as they are blurred to keep the focal point on you, so take family shots where your family is comfortable!
